Only the Good Die Young

We are only a couple of weeks into 2011, still high on the possibilities a new year brings. The recent tragedy in Tucson, Arizona smacked us in the face with the fragility of life. 6 innocent people, including a nine year old girl dead, and a dozen others injured including United States Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who remains in serious condition after miraculously surviving a gunshot wound to the head. A deranged individual's action instantly changed the lives of the families and society as a whole. Quietly closer to home we lose loved ones every day, both expected and suddenly.Last Fall The Empty Nesters, part of the Boomer/Sandwich generation, experienced the passing of several parents of friends. We comfort our friends during their times of sadness. It is the tragic death of a peer that shakes us to the core. Facing our own mortality doesn't come easy at our age. I suppose it never does. Reading the obituaries in the local paper or in today's version of the town crier, Facebook, connects us to the lives of people with whom we may have lost touch. Claudia recently attended the funeral of such a friend. Sharing memories with community brings comfort. Burying someone is the ultimate act of kindness- it is an act that the deceased cannot do for themselves or every repay. The takeaway of emotion from a week of loss should be renewed commitment to life, to friends, to work, to passion and to love.
Rest in Peace my dear friend. May your memory be a blessing and your legacy be inspiration.
