That's Life

As the old song says " You're riding high in April, shot down in May." It wasn't supposed to end this way. We were supposed to be cruising through the Western Conference in April and May, meeting up with the best of the East in June, then celebrating the Purple and Gold with Randy Newman's" I Love L.A." blaring down the parade route. We were supposed to send Phil off to retirement in Montana with another championship ring. But instead, Mother's Day 2011 saw an epic fail on the part of the Los Angeles Lakers. I hope Mrs. Nowitski and Mrs. Barea had a nice Mother's Day watching their sons wipe out the defending champs. I'm guessing the mothers of Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum didn't.
These are some of the worst times to be a sports fan in Los Angeles. The Lakers were swept out of the playoffs, The Dodgers are in disarray amid team owner Frank McCourt's nasty divorce and revelations that he has leveraged the team for personal gain. Our local colleges aren't faring much better. USC football is still on probation and ineligible for post season play. UCLA had another lackluster (translate: losing) season. Bruin basketball's efforts to return to glory have been thwarted by player's defection to the NBA. The NHL's Kings started the season strong, stumbled late in the season and ultimately lost 3 home games in the playoffs. Heck - even in the Kentucky Derby the best a Southern Californian horse could do was 10th place. Sheesh! It's going to be a long summer.
And how was your Mother's Day?
